Saturday morning, a crew aboard Boat 5 reported for a stand by at Leonardtown Wharf for the first annual boat races being held by the Southern Maryland Boat Club Summer Regatta. Several races were held throughout the day on the course that ran just over 3/4 of a mile in the Breton Bay. With several vendors on site and bystanders taking in the good weather, the event was a success. Boat 5 staged just outside of the race course ready to deploy in case of an emergency. Thankfully the crew was not needed as all races were concluded without an emergency incident.
Once the event concluded and the Fire Boat was returning to quarters, a sail boating accident was observed in the area of Abell's Wharf on the Breton Bay. The 10' sail boat was under wind power when control was lost and overturned sending both occupants on board into the water. Nearby jet skis were able to reach the subjects and assist while Boat 5 and the Coast Guard responded in from the area. Both subjects were taken onto Boat 5 and transported to shore to be assessed by waiting EMS. Ambulance 196 obtained two signed refusals and the sail boat was towed to shore with minor damage. Overall the boat operated for approximately 8 hours that day.
