| On Wednesday afternoon at 1323 hours, Station 5 was alerted to a Hazardous Condition call at the intersection of Budds Creek Road and Colton Point Road. Squad 5 responded on the call and upon arrival located a fuel oil transport tanker that had spilled an unknown amount of product in the intersection.
Upon further investigation the crew determined that one of the top fills was unsecured on the tank and when the vehicle stopped at the intersection several gallons flowed out of the truck and on to the road. It was also determined that the fuel had traveled into a storm drain which comprimised a waterway.
Squad 5 requested the hazmat team and established the command. Reports were also received from motorist that product was on the road in the area of Chaptico. Command then requested Company 2 be added to the call to check that area. Hazmat 18 and Hazmat 13 along with Engine 132 and Rescue Squad 2 responded on the call. Engine 11 was also added for manpower.
Once hazmat team members arrived MDE was requested due to the nature of the spill and communications started the State Highway Administration for sand trucks. Crews put down numerous bags of absorbant and ensured the leak was contained at the truck. Booms were placed in a stream that ran to the St. Clement's Bay to contain any oil that entered the storm drains in the area. Hazmat 16 was requested to the scene for the pump off units but they were not utilized.
Hazmat 13 team members went to the top of the tanker and pumped the remaining oil into buckets that was in the cat walk. Once the oil was pumped in the buckets the truck was moved out of the road. State Highway spread two loads of sand on the road to eliminate anyfurther traffic hazards.
Once the sand was spread the road was opened back up. MDE responded to the scene to oversee the cleanup by the trucking company.
