Every year members of the department take time to attend the annual Maryland State Firemen's Convention held in Ocean City, Maryland. This year about 15 members from the station made the trip to participate in several of the events.
This year was a big year in Ocean City for the department due to one of our auxiliary members, Barbara McWilliams, becoming the Maryland State Ladies Auxiliary President. This is a great accomplishment for her and our department. Another story will be written about this achievement soon.
Among other events taking place in Ocean City, several members were nominated for awards. Anthony Hammett was nominated for the Smith N Stathem, Jr. Safety award, John D. (Speedy) Nelson was nominated for State Firefighter of the Year and Barbara Nelson of the auxiliary was nominated for the Jane Todd Trophy for Fire Woman of the Year. They all received honors for their nominations at the awards ceremony.
On Wednesday, the annual firemens parade took place starting at the inlet of the boardwalk in Ocean City. This year in honor of Barbara McWilliams becoming president the department brought 6 pieces of apparatus to the event. After the parade the awards were given out at the convention center.
The department received 3 awards at the parade. The awards won were honorable mention for engine 1500 gmp or over for Engine 51, a judges award for Boat 5, and 2nd best special unit for Water Supply 5.
