On Sunday afternoon, members of the Fire and EMS community along with representatives from county government, school board and representatives of the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center Fire and EMS program gathered at Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department. This was for the annual graduation banquet for the Fire and Rescue Cadet Class program. This is the 7th year of the class and this year there were 16 cadets in the program.

This program is designed to allow 11th and 12th grade students the opportunity to take fire and rescue courses at the tech center as a 1 year program of study. During the school year, they take many courses including Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, Rescue Technician, Building Construction, Hazardous Materials Operations and Emergency Medical Technician Basic. This prepares the students for a career in the fire and rescue field upon graduation.

This year our department had one student in the program, Susan Burch. Susan completed all of the courses in the program. She received several awards during the banquet for being in the top three EMT and Rescue grade point averages. She also received a leadership award given by the instructor.

The banquet was a great ceremony for the students. Past Waldorf VFD Chief Dan Stevens was the master of ceremonies. There were also remarks from Mary Washington from the School Board, Theo Cramer the Executive Director of the Tech Center and Commissioner President Russell and Commissioner Morris.

Congratulations to all of the graduates of the program and we wish you much success in your future in the fire and rescue field.
