On Thursday morning Stations 5, 1, 2, 7, EMS 59, 19 and ALS were alerted to a reported house fire on River Springs Road in Avenue. A neighbor called reporting a fire in the house and the occupants were still inside. Chief 5 arrived on the scene to find a single story house with smoke showing from the rear of the house. Command was established on Side A of the structure.

Upon investigation the occupants were located and were assisted out of the Side B of the house. A neighbor was using a garden hose to contain the fire until the arrival of Engine 51. Engine 51 dropped a supply line at the end of the driveway that was picked up by Tanker 5. The fire was knocked down and contained to the laundry room. The crews opened up the room and checked for further extension.

No further extension was found and the assignment was held with Company 5 and Truck 7 along with Ambulance 597. Both occupants were taken to Ambulance 597 to be evaluated and were then transported to Medstar St. Mary's Hospital. Truck 7 assisted with ventilation and overhaul.

Once the overhaul was complete all units returned. The fire was caused by a malfunctioning furnace. All units operated for approximately one hours before returning to quarters.
