Fatal Shed Fire In Avenue

At 2320 hours on Friday, Stations 5, 1, 2, 7, 9, 6 along with EMS Stations 59, 19 and ALS were alerted to a reported structure fire with subjects trapped in the 37000 Block of River Springs Road in Avenue. Responding units were advised there was a shed on fire near the home with a possible person trapped inside.

Engine 52 and Chief 5 arrived on scene locating a shed fully involved behind the home. Chief 5 established the command and Engine 52 pulled an attack line to extinguish the fire. After the fire was extinguished, a deceased person was located inside. The assignment was scaled back holding Company 5 and 59 units. The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Fire Marshals Office responded to the scene to investigate. Engine 51, Tanker 5, Tanker 51 and Squad 5 responded to the incident with a total of 14 Volunteers. Crews remained on the scene assisting law enforcement for an extended period of time.
