By Fire Chief J.A. Nelson
January 9, 2014

On Thursday morning at 0333 hours, Stations 5, 1, 2, 7, 59 and 19 were alerted to a house fire in the area of Oliver Lane on Grampton Road in Clements. Chief 5A arrived on the scene a short time after dispatch finding a single story house fully involved on Grampton Road a short distance in from Colton Point Road.

Chief 5 arrived and established the command. Chief 5 requested two additional tankers and a engine to be added to the assignment. Initial reports from neighbors were the occupants were possibly home because of the vehicles in the driveway. After a brief period it was confirmed that no one was home and the house was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Engine 54 laid a 5 inch supply line at the driveway and the crew pulled two handlines to the fire. Tanker 5 initially picked up Engine 54's line until they were shifted to the tanker shuttle. Truck 1 reported to Side A and Engine 14 utilized the backup line off Engine 54. Engine 74 and 24 operated the third handline on Side C of the structure. The crews made an initial knock on the fire before the ladder pipe was utilized

Additional crews from Mechanicsville, Bay District and Bel Alton all arrived and went to work assisting with extinguishment of hotspots and overhaul. Engine 11 set up a draft site at the Leonardtown Center for tanker shuttle operations. Engine 51 drafted from the portable tank off Tanker 5 and supplied the scene with water. Tanker 5, Engine 14, Engine 24, Engine 224, Engine 74, Charles Tanker 10, and Charles Tanker 1 were all part of the tanker shuttle.

Crews conducted overhaul operations for an extended period of time. The State Fire Marshal was requested to conduct the investigation. It was determined the fire was the result of a portable heater igniting materials inside the house.

Units operated at the scene for over three hours before returning to quarters. State and County Road crews responded to the scene to assist with sand and salt for the ice on the roads from the apparatus.
