At 10:05 p.m. Tuesday, Station 5 and surrounding companies were alerted to a barn fire on Roosevelt Blvd in Chaptico with reported subject trapped. While responding, Communications advised a male was working on a vehicle and was trapped inside the barn. Safety 5A arrived on scene confirming a 50' x 100' barn heavily involved in fire with one person trapped. With this information the Working Incident Task Force was started along with two fire boats. Engine 52 dropped a supply line from the end of the driveway and upon arrival pulled a 2.5" and 1.75" attack line to the front side of the barn. Chief 2 arrived and established command.
Engine 54 (Chief 5C) arrived and pulled to the scene as a nurse tanker for the initial attack while water supply was being established. Crews from Engine 52, Engine/Tanker 54 and Engine 22 made an aggressive push on the fire while searching for the victim. Tanker 5 (Chief 5A) and Tanker 2 supplied the scene a short time later and Engine 11 was sent to the boat ramp on Bay Drive for Water Supply. While extinguishing the fire, Truck 1's crew located the trapped victim who was deceased. Crews continued to extinguish hot spots and conducted overhaul. Engine 54 transitioned to the pier at the incident scene and drafted from the Wicomico River and directly supplied the fire ground.
Multiple other crews from Stations 7, 9 and Charles County Companies operated at the scene. The State Fire Marshals Office was requested to respond and conducted the investigation into the incident. Once the fire was under control, crews operated completing overhaul and hitting hot spots.
Once overhaul was completed the assignment was held with Companies 5, 2 and 1. Crews remained on scene and assisted the State Fire Marshals Office Investigators until they completed their investigation. Thanks to Engine 61 who transferred to our station for several hours during this incident.
We send our sincere condolences to the family for their loss from this tragic incident.
