July 15, 2012

UPDATE: The National Weather Service has confirmed that a weak tornado which began as a water spout in the Potomac River caused the damage in the Colton's Point area on Sunday. A storm report was issued by National Weather and the storm had maximal wind of 75 mph.

On Sunday evening a strong storm cell moved down the Potomac River and hit portions of Colton's Point. There were numerous trees on homes and cars and some power lines that were down.

Crews located damage at seven homes off Windy Land and Point Breeze Road. This damage included trees on houses, trees on cars and a boat that was blown off a lift and overturned in the river. Crews worked to remove trees and assist the owners with securing their property.

A large tree fell on an unoccupied house on Windy Lane and caused significant damage. Crews removed the tree and placed a salvage cover over the roof to avoid any further damage until the owner could make repairs. The Department of Natural Resources was notified about an overturned boat in the Potomac River that was blown from its boat lift.

Crews operated on the scene for about two hours before returning to quarters.
